Summary of Chapter 8: "We Capture A Flag" (video)
Camp Life and Sword Fighting
Percy settles into a daily routine at Camp
Half-Blood. He studies Ancient Greek with Annabeth Chase and discovers that his
dyslexia actually makes reading the ancient text easier than English. However,
he struggles to find an outdoor skill in which he excels: he accidentally
shoots an arrow into Chiron’s tail, gets outrun by wood nymphs, and is
repeatedly beaten in wrestling by Clarisse. The only activity he naturally
thrives at is canoeing.
On Thursday, Luke leads Cabin 11 in a
sword-fighting lesson. None of the practice swords balance properly in Percy's
hands. After a grueling sparring round that leaves Percy battered, he pours ice
water over his head during a break. Instantly rejuvenated, Percy steps up to
demonstrate a disarming technique with Luke, the best swordsman at camp in
three hundred years. To everyone's astonishment, Percy successfully disarms
Luke and holds the sword at his chest. When they try it a second time, however,
Percy’s burst of energy vanishes, and Luke effortlessly bests him, leaving Luke
intrigued by Percy's potential.
The Pact of the Big Three
On Friday, Percy talks with Grover at the
lake. Grover reveals that Mr. D (Dionysus) has suspended judgment on whether
Grover earns his searcher's license; his fate remains tied to Percy's. If Percy
receives a quest and Grover keeps him safe, he might finally get his license.
Percy asks why four of the camp’s cabins
are unoccupied. Grover explains that Cabin 8 is honorary for the maiden goddess
Artemis, and Cabin 2 is honorary for Hera. The other empty cabins belong to the
"Big Three"—Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. Grover reveals that after
World War II—which was essentially a destructive war fought between the demigod
children of Zeus and Poseidon against the children of Hades—the three brothers
swore a sacred oath on the River Styx never to sire mortal children again due
to their immense, dangerous power.
However, Zeus broke the oath seventeen
years earlier, fathering a daughter named Thalia. Enraged by the broken oath,
Hades sent Tartarus’s worst monsters after her. When she reached the camp hill,
pursued by the three Furies and a pack of hellhounds, Thalia sacrificed herself
so her friends and satyr keeper could escape. As she died, Zeus took pity on
her and transformed her into the pine tree that now magically protects Camp
Half-Blood's borders.
The Game of Capture the Flag
That evening, the camp gathers for Capture
the Flag. An alliance between Cabin 11 (Hermes), Athena, and Apollo faces off
against Ares and the remaining cabins. Chiron distributes armor and real bronze
weapons, enforcing rules against killing and maiming. Annabeth places Percy on
"border patrol" alone at the creek, armed with a bulky shield and
unbalanced sword.
Soon, Clarisse and four other Ares campers
ambush Percy across the stream to avenge the previous bathroom incident.
Clarisse attacks with an electric spear while her cabin mates slash Percy’s
arm. They shove him into the creek.
The moment Percy hits the water, his senses
sharpen and strength surges through him. Moving with uncanny reflexes, he
easily knocks out or disarms the Ares attackers and snaps Clarisse's spear in
two. While the Ares cabin was busy distracting Percy, Luke sneaks through to
capture the enemy flag, securing victory for the blue team.
The Monster Attack and the Big Reveal
Annabeth materializes beside Percy, taking
off an invisibility cap (a New York Yankees baseball hat). Percy realizes she
intentionally used him as bait knowing Clarisse would target him. Annabeth
notices that Percy’s arm wound has vanished after being in the stream. When she
instructs him to step out of the water, Percy instantly collapses with
exhaustion.
Before Annabeth can process this, a
monstrous hellhound from the Fields of Punishment leaps into camp—an impossible
intrusion unless summoned by someone inside the borders. The beast lunges at
Percy, shredding his armor and wounding his chest before Chiron shoots it down
with a rapid volley of arrows.
