Noun clauses - Definition

1.      Definition:
A noun clause functions like a noun and can do anything a noun can do. A noun can be used as the subject or the object of a sentence.
The following pronouns are used as the beginning of noun clauses
that
I told you that Claire did not care.
who
Do you know who that perosn is?
where
I have no idea where Kavin is.
whether
I don’t know whether or not Peter is home.
which
Tell me which one is yours, please!
when
Do you know when he will come back?
what
Kathy doesn’t know what she should do.
whatever
I will do whatever you say.
how
Kate wanted to know how John was.
why
He told the teacher why he was late.

2.      A noun clause can be used as a subject, object, or complement (used after a linking verb, such as is, am or are)
A noun clause used as a subject:
Ex:
1. Why he married Amy puzzles me.
à Why he married Amy – a noun clause acts as a subject.
2. All Honey talks about is money.
à All Honey talks about – a noun clause acts as a subject.
3. What Skip needs is your ship.
à What Skip needs – a noun clause acts as a subject.
4. Why Iris chose to dye her hair pink was not clear to Kris.
à Why Iris chose to dye her hair pink – a noun clause acts as a subject.

A noun clause used as an object:
Ex:
1.      I told you that Claire did not care.
à that Claire did not care – a noun clause acts as an object.
2.      I thought that Nat understood that.
à that Nat understood that – a noun clause acts as an object.
3.      Rick said that he was sick.
à that he was sick – a noun clause acts as an object.
4.      Trish suggested that Flo go to the University of Chicago to get her Ph.D. in English.
à that Flo go to the University of Chicago to get her Ph.D. in English – a noun clause acts as an object.

A noun clause used as a complement (after a linking verb)
Ex:
1.      It may have been that Elaine missed the plane.
à that Elaine missed the plane – a noun clause acts as a complement.
2.      The trouble was that Gwen had never played chess against Glen.

à that Gwen had never played chess against Glen – a noun clause acts as a complement.
